Welcome to the October / November edition of the newsletter!

This edition is focusing on green beans. We all know that they are suitable for failsafe and are a staple of the diet. I don't know about you, but it's very easy to just do meat and 3 veg with beans when in a hurry or out of inspiration. I am hoping that there are a few recipes included that will help to spice up the bean for your plate. Please remember that some of these recipes are taken from non failsafe blogs, please read the notes for minor changes like leaving out pepper to make it suitable for failsafe.

The 16th October is World Food Day. "Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together. Countries, the private sector and civil society need to make sure that our food systems GROW a variety of food to NOURISH a growing population and SUSTAIN the planet, TOGETHER. World Food Day 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of FAO (Food & Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations) in an exceptional moment as countries around the world deal with the widespread effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It’s a time to look into the future we need to build together".

it is more important than ever to recognise the need to support our food heroes - farmers and workers throughout the food system - who are making sure that food makes its way from farm to fork even amid disruptions as unprecedented as the current COVID-19 crisis. Please see the fact sheet below for more info and what we all can do to help.

Take care and stay safe!

Green Beans

If you are looking for an easy veggie to grow, beans are an ideal choice. They’re quick to grow, can give you an abundant harvest and also, suffer from few pests and diseases, making them a hassle free veggie - great for beginners and beloved by experienced gardeners, too.
For more info from Yates on "How to grow beans in a garden or in a pot", "Growing tips" and "Companion plants", click here.

Now is the time to plant beans! They are also really good plants for your Yummy Yard because they are easy to grow and produce stacks of beans. They are a climber so are excellent where space is an issue!

Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together

The COVID-19 global health crisis has been a time to reflect on things we truly cherish and our most basic needs. These uncertain times have made many of us rekindle our appreciation for a thing that some take for granted and many go without: food.

Food is the essence of life and the bedrock of our cultures and communities. Preserving access to safe and nutritious food is and will continue to be an essential part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for poor and vulnerable communities, who are hit hardest by the pandemic and resulting economic shocks.

World Food Day is all about learning how to store uneaten food properly for another day’s meal to avoid wasting perfectly good food. By supporting food heroes and buying locally grown fresh food, such as from a farmers’ market in your community. Support food related businesses and retailers. Eating seasonal food can also be riper, tastier and more nutritious. Look for volunteer opportunities at your local food bank or community kitchen. If you have a green space at home, access to a garden, or a balcony with space for plant pots, you can learn how to grow your own fruits, vegetables and herbs. You’ll learn a lot about how food is produced and grow your appreciation for all the work that goes into cultivating produce. By supporting development initiatives, such as school meal and nutrition programs in your local community, you can raise awareness about the importance of eating well and promote healthy eating through education.

Calling out to all children and teens around the world! If you’re between ages 5 to 19, we want you to use your imagination and create a poster of your favourite food hero at work. Enter contest here.
